Our Story

Even as we make great strides in medical science, the way we experience healthcare remains a challenge. We were established to help bridge that gap—helping organizations address their most pressing needs.

ForHealth Consulting partners with health and human services agencies and other purposeful organizations to support innovative care initiatives and solutions for our most vulnerable populations.

As a part of UMass Chan Medical School, we leverage world-class expertise and deep experience to create innovative financial, clinical, and operational solutions across the health and human services system. We collaborate closely with healthcare partners to think big about how they can do what they do better—for themselves and the people they serve. Most of all, we believe in the power of a shared purpose; together, we can make healthcare better.

How We Got Here

In 1983, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services turned to UMass Chan Medical School (UMass Chan) to supply physicians and clinical staff across the Department of Mental Health’s network of 12 state mental health facilities. This role supported compliance with federal court oversight and broader de-institutionalization/quality-of-care mandates. In the years that followed, the Medical School received a growing number of requests from health and human services agencies across the Commonwealth to help them find solutions to their biggest healthcare challenges.

The success of this model led to the establishment of ForHealth Consulting (then known as Commonwealth Medicine) as a full division of UMass Chan in 1999. Our services and capabilities have expanded over the years based on the needs of these clients and the ever-changing healthcare landscape. Today, we draw on the knowledge, research, and public health expertise of our more than 1,000 ForHealth Consulting and 5,000 UMass Chan colleagues to provide innovative clinical, operational, and financial healthcare solutions to clients locally, nationally, and internationally.
