Safe Spaces were created to provide a sense of security and comfort but may hinder genuine growth and understanding. Brave Spaces challenge individuals to confront discomfort and engage in critical conversations that address systemic injustices and promote social change. This research team compared the concepts of safe spaces versus brave spaces in nursing and developed a Brave Spaces toolkit for those in the nursing profession. Engaging in Brave Spaces requires individuals to acknowledge their own privilege, listen to diverse perspectives, and be willing to be accountable for their actions and words.

Researchers advise those to use the Brave Space Toolkit when there are complex conversations that require understanding of diverse perspectives or that confront high stakes and contentious issues openly.
