Welcome to the Division of Renal Medicine

Page Menu

The Division of Renal Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center has a trifold mission of patient care, education, and research. Division faculty comprises a diverse group of physicians with varied areas of expertise within the broad field of nephrology. Much of our energy is focused on establishing effective models of interdisciplinary care for renal patients with complex illnesses. We work collaboratively with colleagues in the Divisions of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and Palliative Care providing comprehensive nephrology care to the expanding population of diabetic patients, as well as compassionate care and supportive advanced planning for ERSD patients with declining quality of life. We are also actively working with the Department of Urology to develop programs for treating and preventing nephrolithiasis.

The division provides inpatient and outpatient nephrologic care to patients at multiple hospital sites in central Massachusetts. Our clinical services include robust kidney, kidney/pancreas, and liver transplant programs, evaluation of living organ donors, and long-term care of the transplant recipient. Within the region, we manage over 75% of the patients with renal disease. Outreach extends into the Central Mass Community providing services at 9 hospitals, 6 office practice sites, and 9 satellite dialysis units with our industry partners (DaVita and FMCNA). We also operate programs in nocturnal dialysis and the only exclusively home dialysis center in all of New England.
