Medical Student Kylie Long presented at the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER) annual meeting in Washington, DC. Her project titled “ "Gamification of Healthcare Finances: A New Frontier to Improving Medical Trainee's Healthcare Financial Literacy Rate” was a platform oral presentation.

Project

The drive and motivation for this project really came from wanting to help the current and future generation of providers to understand the structural and economic underpinnings of a healthcare system that is so complex and evolving. The current training curriculum at any stage is heavily skewed towards clinical knowledge with a lack of education in areas of healthcare finance. Most clinicians and trainees have no idea how money flows through the very system they operate and participate in. Simply put, they have no idea how they are getting paid! So the project really aims to address an unmet need by making a historically difficult subject to understand easier through gamification. By turning concepts into a character role playing game that providers could participate in, we hope to encourage and improve the future physician leaders’ understanding and knowledge of healthcare finances.

When asked about school and future plans Kylie responded "I’m half way through my 3rd year. Future plans – become a radiologist of course! Long term, definitely hope to be at the intersection of technology and medicine as an advocate for implementing digital health solutions to improve patient outcomes.  ðŸ˜Š I’m a firm believer that technology is a tool and not replacement for providers."
