Joseph Ferrucci, MD

The Joseph T. Ferrucci Jr Radiologist of the Year award was created in 2024 to honor Professor Ferrucci, MD, the former Division Chief of Gastrointestinal Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Chair of the Departments of Radiology at Boston Medical Center and the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. His accomplishments, particularly in gastrointestinal radiology, are extensive and include having given 30 named lectures, more than 100 invited lectures in 20 countries, 35 visiting professorships, 12 books including the world-renowned 5 volume set simply known as “Tavares & Ferrucci”, and more than 250 original peer-reviewed publications. Professor Ferrucci has served as president of the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists, the International Society of Biliary Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society, and the Mass Radiological Society. He is an Honorary Member of the European Radiological Society and the Royal Faculty of Radiology in Ireland. Amongst his many honors, he has been awarded the Gold Medal from the American Roentgen Ray Society and the Waler B. Cannon Medal from the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists.

He is always available to help colleagues, clear the “unread” x-ray lists, or ensure that the Wellesley office is running smoothly. To honor his numerous contributions to both the field of Radiology and specifically to the Department of Radiology at UMASS Chan, the Joseph T. Ferrucci Jr. Radiologist of the Year is created.
