Letter from the Chair
Dear All,
As we are now moving into the “optimization” phases of AGFA and EPIC, I’d like to thank all of the IT teams, and all the Radiology faculty and staff who have made the “go live” phase successful. We still have a lot of work to do, but now have all new platforms to help care for our patients and manage the department.
In addition to launching AGFA and EPIC, we also integrated the Health Alliance Radiology practice into the department on October 1. In this issue of the newsletter we feature Patti Vailliant – the new director of Radiology of Health Alliance. Although Patti just started at HA one month before the IT and group practice transition, she has hit the ground running and has been one of the several key factors that has made this transition a success. Patti works closely with her two supervisors Jeff Tallman and Debra Kraska, and Dr. Amin Chaoui – our chief of Radiology at HA.
On the medical school “side” of the department we have several transitions. After many years leading the DSF Anatomy course, we celebrated the retirement of Professor Anne Gilroy, as well as the retirement of long-time DSF course administrator Wendie Allain. Anne will returning to UMass in the spring to give the annual UMMS “last lecture” – in recognition of her honor of receiving the 2017 Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Teaching. I am pleased to announce the appointment of Lela Giannaris PhD as Interim Director for the anatomy component of the DSF Course and the appointment of Yasmin Carter PhD to the role of founding Director of the Innovations Lab (iLab) in iCELS.
At the end of December we thanked Dr. Sue McMaster for her many years as a member of the Breast Imaging Division and wished her well and many years of enjoyment as she transitions to retirement and pursuit of her many interests. Last month we also celebrated a milestone birthday for Dr. Ferrucci, and were able to lure him away from the Wellesley reading for a short time so that we could all be together in the chest reading room.
The newsletter also contains stories about an innovative anatomy project by UMMS student Matthew Breen, the first “Grand Rounds” of our new format, another successful “Night at the Museum” with Dr. Andrew Singer, and updates on Radiology faculty and residents at RSNA and the European Congress of Radiology.
