Dr. Tara Catanzano (Director of the radiology residency program at Baystate Hospital) and Dr. Carolynn DeBenedectis have founded and co-chair the UMMS Baystate Women in Radiology Group. The purpose of this group is to promote advancement of the careers of women in the field of Radiology. The group shall provide opportunities for faculty and scholarly/research development through a series of lectures, mentorship programs, workshops and group discussions. The WIR group was assembled to focus on needs and challenges faced by women in Radiology and to provide a support network to assist them in their career development. A formal curriculum will be developed and will include topics such as CV development, how to promote your accomplishments, educator’s portfolio, how to become involved in committees etc. The group is open to any female trainee (resident or fellow) or faculty member of UMMS or Baystate Medical Center. There is no minimum number required. The only membership criteria are that the member must be a female trainee or faculty member at UMMS Worcester or UMMS-Baystate. We held our first meeting at the Salem Cross in West Brookfield MA on January 27th. At the meeting a recent article about female mentorship in radiology was discussed and Dr. DeBenedectis gave a talk about how to promote your accomplishments. Meetings will be monthly and the group will alternate between virtual meetings and in person meetings. Future topics include: CV writing, writing manuscripts, research project planning, grant writing, and work life balance as a woman in radiology just to name a few. If you are interested in joining please email Dr. DeBenedectis (carolynn.debenedectis2@umassmemorial.org).
