PEM Fellows

Marie was born and raised just down the road from UMass in Hudson, MA. Inspired by her family full of strong women in medicine, she knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career as a physician. She graduated from UConn (go Huskies!!) with a major in Physiology and Neurobiology, as well as several intramural accolades, most notably including innertube water polo all-star and 2015 Oozeball Champion. During her gap year, she spent a year working as a counselor for adolescents with severe psychiatric disorders at the Worcester Recovery Center. She remained in Worcester to attend medical school at UMass where her longstanding love of pediatric medicine was solidified. She was thrilled to match at UMass for her pediatric residency, after which she stayed on for a Chief Resident year. During residency, Marie found herself drawn to emergency medicine, specifically the care of high acuity patients and the opportunity to help patients and families understand a wide range of diagnoses. A self-proclaimed “UMass Lifer”, it felt like fate that Marie matched into the PEM fellowship at UMass. She can’t wait to further explore her interests in PEM including procedural training, medical education, and trauma management/resuscitation.  Outside of medicine, Marie loves DIY projects, gardening, and spending time outdoors with her husband, daughter and dog.

Alessandra grew up in southern New Hampshire, and attended Tufts University in Medford, where she played on the soccer team and earned her bachelors degree in Biology. Afterwards, she received her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. Inspired by her own pediatrician growing up, she had a strong interest in pediatrics and gladly stayed in Boston for pediatric residency at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. While she always knew she wanted to be in pediatrics, Alessandra discovered her passion for pediatric emergency medicine and medical education during her residency at MGH. When Alessandra isn’t at the hospital, she can be found playing soccer, traveling to new places, reading, or spending time with her family.

Michelle grew up in the North Shore of Massachusetts, and attended Boston College for her undergraduate degree in biology. After finishing college, she lived in Tanzania for two years working for the Peace Corps. There, she worked in the public health sector, with most of her work focusing on the implementation of HIV/AIDS test & treat programs and education. She primarily worked with children and adolescents during this time and also lived on the grounds of a primary school, and it was there that she discovered her love of working with children! She returned to her home state and completed medical school at UMass. She attended residency at Mass General Hospital for Children, where her interests included the development of educational tools for residents and medical students. It was also there that she discovered a love of emergency medicine and providing acute care for children, prompting an interest in pediatric emergency medicine. Her interests in emergency medicine include the function of the emergency room as a point of access to care for underserved populations. In her free time, Michelle can be found developing new recipes or engaging in any activity that gets her into the woods. She is thrilled to be returning to UMass for PEM fellowship!!
