Clerkship in Surgery
The Vista clerkship in Surgery includes seven weeks of General Surgery and Subspecialties within the Surgery-Radiology integrated unit. The 2-week pathways course is also located within this integrated unit. The majority of students are assigned to the University and Memorial campuses with complementary rotations at our community educational partner hospitals including St. Vincent’s Hospital, Berkshire Medical Center, Lahey and Cape Cod Hospital. General surgery rotations include minimally invasive surgery, colorectal surgery, acute care surgery, Haidak surgery, and surgical oncology. Subspecialty rotations include anesthesiology, cardiac surgery, otolaryngology and head and neck surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, thoracic surgery, transplantation surgery, trauma surgery, urology, and vascular surgery. All students participate in weekly outpatient clinics, didactics and simulation. Students are introduced to the operating room, care of the surgical inpatient and consultative surgical care.
Core objectives and experiences include:
- basic knowledge and skills of the surgical care of patients team-based, collaborative patient care
- core procedural skills
- the reflective and ethical practices of surgical care
Student competency is assessed through clinical performance as evaluated by faculty and residents (40%), oral examination (10%), NBME written examination (15%), and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination – OSCE (20%) and assessment of the longitudinal focus topics (Health Equity Diversity and Inclusion, Health Systems Science and Societal Forces of Health and Disease.
