Endocrine and Reproductive Systems

This is a 7-week block which will cover anatomy, histology, embryology, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, normal and abnormal imaging for endocrine and reproductive systems in an integrated manner. The course utilizes a variety of teaching formats including large group lectures, independent learning modules, small group conferences, laboratories and/or simulation exercises, and case-based learning exercises. Material is presented to illustrate basic principles and emphasize thoughtful analysis, synthesis of information and its clinical application, and to help develop critical clinical thinking.

After completion of the endocrine and reproductive systems block, the learner will be able to:

1. Correlate the unique structural (macro and micro) organization of the endocrine and reproductive systems in the human body with their components, their development, function, and communication across systems.
2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge pertaining to normal structure (macro and microstructure) and radiographic appearance of the endocrine and reproductive systems in the human body.
3. Understand the use of imaging modalities in diagnosis of endocrine and reproductive systems diseases and evaluate their roles in diagnosing common alterations in development, structure, or function of the endocrine and reproductive systems.
4. Describe the physiological processes that underlie normal functioning of the endocrine and reproductive systems in the human body.
5. Demonstrate how development of abnormal structure (pathology) or function (pathophysiology) of the endocrine and reproductive system leads to the major classes of human diseases in these systems.
6. Predict clinical outcomes in common disease processes that result from altered development, structure, or function of endocrine and reproductive systems in the human body.
7. Describe the signs and symptoms produced by the major types of disturbance of endocrine and reproductive functions.
8. Describe general and specific medical pharmacology and the general treatment of major classes of endocrine and reproductive diseases.
9. Describe the basic epidemiology and social determinants of health for the major classes of endocrine and reproductive diseases.
10. Interpret and relate diagnostic tests to major classes of endocrine and reproductive diseases.
11. Describe the major effects of normal aging on the endocrine and reproductive systems, and common clinical conditions that most often affect the elderly.
12. Acquire and utilize information from various sources to synthesize critical analysis during case-based clinical scenarios.
13.  Understand how data from an electronic health record and evidence-based medicine guide management of acute and chronic illnesses and the role of preventative care in decreasing the severity of endocrine and reproductive diseases.
