Stacy Potts, MD, MEd, has been appointed senior associate dean for graduate medical education and clinical affairs, Terence R. Flotte, MD, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the T. H. Chan School of Medicine announced this week.
Dr. Potts, professor of family medicine & community health, has been with UMass Chan for 25 years. She will succeed Deborah DeMarco, MD, professor of medicine, senior associate dean for clinical affairs, associate dean for graduate medical education and the recipient of the 2022 Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Service, following Dr. DeMarco’s retirement in June.
Dr. Potts’ experience in graduate medical education (GME) locally, nationally and internationally has shaped her exceptional ability to support the transformational time of residency and fellowship training.
For the past three years, Dr. Potts served as the vice chair of education in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. Her prior experience working as residency program director for the Worcester Family Medicine Residency gave her an essential understanding of the daily challenges that GME program directors face.
Dr. Potts also brings expertise in accreditation requirements and processes, a key component of successful GME programs, having served as chair of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Review Committee for Family Medicine. Among her leadership roles, she is a member of the ACGME-International Medicine-based Review Committee, overseeing GME accreditation around the world in all medical specialties.
As faculty of both the National Institute of Program Director Development and the American Academy of Family Physicians Chief Resident Leadership Program, Dr. Potts extends her mentorship of program leaders to the national stage.
Her clinical work spans more than two decades as a family physician with obstetrics at the Barre Family Health Center since 2001.
Dr. Potts has been widely honored by her national peers, receiving accolades such as the gold, silver and bronze Program Director Recognition Awards from the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine President’s Award. At UMass Chan Medical School, she received the Sarah Stone Excellence in Education Award from the Women’s Faculty Committee in 2018; was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in 2017; and was named Outpatient Teacher of the Year in the Worcester Family Medicine Residency in 2003, among other honors.
Dr. Potts received her medical degree from the University of Vermont and her master’s in medical education from the University of Cincinnati. She completed her residency in family medicine and fellowship in faculty development at UMass Chan.
Dr. DeMarco, who has dedicated 30 years of service to UMass Chan, is recognized as a passionate visionary for graduate medical education and a leader in the field of rheumatology. Her commitment to fostering a rich and welcoming environment for residents and fellows at UMass Chan has had a lasting impact on our institution.
