Scot Bateman, MD, professor of pediatrics and anesthesiology at UMass Medical School, has been named clinical ethicist at UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMMS, according to an announcement by Andrew Karson, MD, MPH, chief medical officer and senior vice president at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
Dr. Bateman will lead the Office of Ethics in providing consultative services and support for a wide range of ethical concerns related to patient care, including informed consent, surrogate decision making, goals of care, organ donation, end-of-life care and medical futility. He will also provide information, education and recommendations to physicians, nurses, clinical staff, students, patients and families on ethical issues. In this role, Bateman will serve as a leader and advisor on the hospital Ethics and Treatment Issues Committee, and guide and recommend hospital policies related to ethical patient care and medical practice.
Bateman is the medical director of UMass Memorial Medical Center’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). He also serves as a palliative care physician at UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center, providing inpatient palliative care consultation and follow-up for children facing life limiting illnesses or injuries. From 2018 to 2019, he served as the interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics for the Medical Center. He was the 2019 recipient of UMass Medical School’s Department of Pediatrics Chief Resident Award for commitment to teaching and he has been a finalist for the Massachusetts Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award.
Bateman holds an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and a master’s degree in clinical investigation from Boston University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School.
