Xiaoduo Fan, MD, MPH, associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Psychotic Disorders Clinical and Research Program at UMass Medical School, has been appointed to a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Advisory Panel for Healthcare Delivery and Disparities Research. In this three-year role he will participate in the PCORI-funded study of the comparative effectiveness of cognitive enhancement therapy versus social skills training in serious mental illness. The study will compare two psychosocial interventions that can result in meaningful improvement for persons with schizophrenia and related illnesses whose problems with social and thinking skills limit their success in the community.
Dr. Fan brings extensive clinical and research expertise in serious mental illnesses to the PCORI project. He is a practicing board-certified psychiatrist whose research focuses on developing innovative pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for refractory symptoms of schizophrenia, medical co-morbidity, co-occurring substance use disorders, and real-life functioning in patients with schizophrenia.
The largest public funder of clinical effectiveness research, PCORI was established to help patients and caregivers make better-informed decisions about the health care choices they face every day. PCORI, through its advisory panels, brings together voices from across the health care community. They comprise patients and health services researchers as well as practicing and research clinicians with experience in the relevant topic.
