Andrei Korostelev, PhD, associate professor of RNA therapeutics and biochemistry & molecular pharmacology, will be awarded the Earl and Thressa Stadtman Scholar Award from the American Society for Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the annual conference in San Diego in April 2018. The Earl and Thressa Stadtman Young Scholar Award was established by their friends and colleagues to preserve their legacies as scientists and mentors. It is awarded biennially to a scientist with 10 years or less of post-postdoctoral experience.
Dr. Korostelev is a structural biologist, who studies how cells make proteins, the building blocks of all life. The complex molecular machine responsible for making protein in each cell is the ribosome. Recent work from the Korostelev lab utilized crystallography and cryo-EM to visualize the detailed dynamics of the ribosome in action, as in a molecular movie. He was one of the original proponents for bringing cryo-EM to UMMS, along with colleagues, Brian Kelch, PhD, assistant professor of biochemistry & molecular pharmacology; and Celia Schiffer, PhD, professor of biochemistry & molecular pharmacology and director of the Institute for Drug Resistance.
