Gyongyi Szabo, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and vice chair for research in the Department of Medicine, was inducted into the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on Wednesday, Oct. 15.

The external membership of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is given to individuals of Hungarian heritage who conduct science internationally and who make exceptional contributions to scientific discoveries. Dr. Szabo was recognized for her contributions in the study of liver diseases and immunology.

“I am deeply honored to be elected to the membership of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences,” Szabo said. “I proudly share this distinction with my colleagues, trainees and mentors who have been part of my journey in scientific curiosity and discoveries in uncovering the role of immunity in liver diseases and using this information to pioneer new treatments for people with liver disease.”

“It has been a privilege to bring my training from Hungary to the fantastic research environment at UMass Medical School and to become part of a world-class community in medical research and education. I am humbled and truly honored to receive this highest level of scientific distinction from my home country.”

Szabo attended the induction ceremony in Budapest with Chancellor Michael F. Collins; Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor of Medical Education, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine; and Robert W. Finberg, MD, the Richard M. Haidack Professor of Medicine and chair and professor of medicine. Szabo gave her inaugural lecture to the assembly.

“Today’s ceremony serves as an important reminder of the global impact of our esteemed faculty’s work,” said Chancellor Collins. “Dr. Szabo is an outstanding representative of and a wonderful ambassador for the University of Massachusetts Medical School.”

The 184th General Assembly of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, opened by the Prime Minister of Hungary, voted on new members of the scientific community in a closed session of academicians. With the new members, the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences has 303 regular, 193 external and 235 honorary members.
