Collaborative Project Aimed at Reducing Delays in Endoscopy Case Completion Presented at the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Meeting

Congratulations to the teams from the Division of Gastroenterology, CITC, Internal Medicine Residency, and UMass Memorial Medical Center whose poster, “Utilizing Anesthesia Risk to Reduce Delays in Endoscopy Case Completion”, was featured during the poster session at the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Meeting in October.

The project aimed to reduce delays in endoscopy case completion by creating and implementing an anesthesia risk-rating calculator within the electronic medical record. Utilizing the anesthesia risk-rating calculator resulted in a “modest decrease” in late endoscopy cancellations due to the need for medical clearance or a higher level of anesthesia care at UMass Medical Center.

“It always seems daunting to work on projects such as these because of the many teams it takes to make this happen, including CITC, IT, Medical Center leadership, endoscopy scheduling, and physicians,” said Christopher Marshall, MD, clinical chief and assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology. “The teams rallied and it has positively impacted patient care. I especially want to highlight the work done by both Dr. Nick Hebda and Kimberly McGuigan who tirelessly worked to take an idea and make it a reality.”
