In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we highlight Andrew Sheridan, MD, a third-year, categorical Internal Medicine Resident. Here, Dr. Sheridan describes his clinical and research interests, what makes UMass Chan a great place for residency, and his work with the Internal Medicine Diversity Action Council and as part of the medical education track.

Weymouth, Massachusetts 

What are your clinical and research interests? 
My primary clinical interest is cardiology and I plan to apply for a fellowship this upcoming application cycle. What I find most interesting about cardiology is that it has much to do with physics; electrical circuits, pressure, and flows. Throughout my training, my favorite rotation has been the cardiac critical care unit. This rotation afforded invaluable hands-on experience in managing critically ill cardiac patients. From closely attending to Fick calculations of cardiac output, to fine-tuning drips, to interpreting difficult EKGs, I found myself enjoying the work we were doing. Before pursuing cardiology, I will get to explore my other interest, hospital medicine, as a nocturnist here at UMass. My experience in hospital medicine thus far has underscored the importance of effective communication, rapid decision-making, and collaboration within interdisciplinary healthcare teams. I am eager to further refine these skills overnight while navigating the complexities of nocturnal patient care.  

Are you involved in any other groups or activities at UMass Chan that you’d like to highlight? 
I am involved in the medical education track and the Internal Medicine Diversity Action Council. As a member of the medical education track, I have taken part in mentorship initiatives such as the medical school’s Longitudinal Preceptor Program and received lectures on innovative teaching methodologies. Also, I am proud to serve on the Diversity Action Council of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. One of the highlights of my time as a resident was presenting at Medical Grand Rounds this past October with other members of the DAC, highlighting the effects of redlining on healthcare outcomes.  

What makes UMass Chan a great place for your residency? 
UMass Chan stands out as an exceptional environment for my residency training! I would have not made it throughout residency without the camaraderie and support shared among my co-residents. I am grateful for the mentors who take a genuine interest in both our personal and professional development. Their guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of residency and charting a course toward achieving my career goals. Finally, UMass's status as a catch-net hospital ensures that residents receive unparalleled training and exposure to a diverse range of cases from a medically complex patient population.   

Favorite Hobbies?
Outside of the hospital, you will often find me either at the golf course, hockey rink, on a mountain, or the beach. My wife, Caitlin, and I also have a 1-year-old son, Jackson, who keeps us quite busy as well!  

Favorite thing to do in Worcester/Worcester area? 
I love to explore the breweries in the surrounding area. Some of my favorites are Seven Saws Brewery and Wachusett Brewery. And of course, making the trek to Tree House is always worth the little extra travel!
