The UMass Chan Medical School Obesity Medicine Fellowship program is a one-year clinical training program which provides advanced subspecialty training in the field of obesity medicine. The program offers one position annually and is designed to fulfill the needs of those trainees who anticipate their future activities to be solely the clinical practice of this specialty as well as those who expect to function as clinician-educators or who intend to pursue careers in obesity medicine. The teaching environment and educational experiences for trainees will prepare them for a career as a clinical, educational, or research leader in this rapidly expanding discipline of medicine.
Fellows will develop clinical expertise in obesity medicine with a focus on the evaluation and management of obesity and related comorbidities in adult and pediatric patients including the care of patients before and after bariatric and endobariatric procedures.
Training will take place in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary weight management center. Fellows will work with and learn from board certified obesity medicine endocrinologists and primary care physicians, pediatric endocrinologists, bariatric surgeons, endobariatric gastroenterologists, registered dietitians, behavioral health psychologists, and exercise physiologists. Elective rotations may include hepatology, exercise medicine, cardiometabolic medicine, lymphedema clinic, and diabetes clinic.
Educational experiences for fellows include clinical preceptorship, a structured curriculum with faculty-led didactic lectures, endocrine grand rounds, obesity medicine quarterly meetings, as well as Obesity Medicine Fellowship Council (OMFC) monthly journal club and didactics.
Fellows will take an active role in presenting at clinical conferences as well as in the education of medical students and residents and complete a mentored research or quality improvement project within the course of the year.
