October Fellow Spotlight: Matthew Greenwood, MD

In this month’s Fellow Spotlight, we feature Matthew Greenwood, MD, a Clinical Informatics fellow at UMass Chan. We recently caught up with Dr. Greenwood to learn more about his clinical and research interests, why he chose UMass for his fellowship, and why the Cape is his favorite place to travel!

Hometown?

Cheshire, CT

What are your clinical and research interests?
I am passionate about empowering physicians, nurses, therapists, and other caregivers to work more effectively and efficiently. My goal is to enhance the tools and systems that support them, ultimately improving the ease of delivery for providers and the health care experience and outcomes for patients. I strive to ensure that advancements in clinical informatics make it easier for providers to deliver high-quality care.

Why did you choose UMass Chan for your fellowship?
I chose UMass Chan for the people. During my interview as a medical student, I was struck by Dr. Scott Kopec’s openness and charisma. I knew he would support and empower me as a resident. His leadership during COVID reinforced my initial impression. During residency, I was recruited to complete physician builder training and become a member of the informatics team by Dr. Robert Steppacher. As an attending, Dr. David McManus charged me with overhauling the UMass Medicine triage system. This project allowed me to work with Dr. Prince Philip and receive insights and support from Dr. Eric Alper. During this project, I also was able to work with many of the analysts who were all extremely knowledgeable and supportive. Throughout my time at UMass, I’ve been impressed by the informatics team’s depth of knowledge and eagerness to teach. This collegial environment has made my journey fulfilling, and I’m excited to contribute to the cutting-edge work happening here. As I look back over the last 5 years, I would not be where I am today if it were not for the people; each step of my success has been fueled by the unique encouragement and support of many individuals at UMass.

Where is your favorite place to travel for vacation and why?
Exploring the Cape with my wife. The National Seashore is one of our favorite places and hosts our annual beach walk as well as a number of activities sponsored by the National Parks Service.

What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?
Skiing.
