In the latest podcast episode of Voices of UMassMed, Jennifer Reidy, MD, shares insight and evidence about how palliative care can ease the burden of complex illness, and discusses her career mission to make it standard of care at UMMS and beyond.
Dr. Reidy, associate professor of family medicine & community health and chief of the Division of Palliative Care in the Department of Medicine, is a champion of palliative care, which is an improved way to help patients manage pain. The goal of palliative care is to match a patient’s choice for care with what they feel is important instead of focusing solely on available treatments.
“Palliative care is one of those things in health care where we really meet that triple aim. We improve quality and reduce harm,” Reidy explains, adding that palliative care also helps reduce health care costs, particularly at end of life from unwanted and nonbeneficial treatments.
Reidy also collaborates with the Massachusetts Coalition for Serious Illness Care and The Conversation Project to improve palliative care.
