Chancellor Collins presented with honorary doctorate from University of Crete

UMass Chan Medical School Chancellor Michael F. Collins, center, received an honorary doctorate from the School of Medicine at the University of Crete in Greece.  


Chancellor Michael F. Collins is the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the School of Medicine at the University of Crete in Greece.

A ceremony for the conferral of the degree was held in the School of Medicine’s Graduate Auditorium, and included remarks from Sofia E. Schiza, MD, PhD, vice-rector for administrative affairs and student welfare and assistant professor of respiratory medicine, and Eleni A. Papadaki, MD, PhD, dean of the Medical School and professor of hematology.

Chancellor Collins presented a speech titled, “A Leadership Perspective on Academic Medicine: Its Privilege, Purpose and Promise.” Collins presented a short history of UMass Chan Medical School and discussed the importance of leadership and ethics in academic medicine.

The honorary doctorate was presented by Christos Tsatsanis, PhD, vice dean of the Medical School. Dr. Tsatsanis celebrated Collins’ contributions to the advancement of medical education and public health in the commonwealth and highlighted the Chancellor’s role in the organization and administration of UMass Chan.
