Welcome from the Interim Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine

Welcome to the Division of Hospital Medicine. As the largest division in the Department of Medicine, our group is comprised of physicians and advanced practice providers who bring a broad range of experience and expertise to UMass Memorial Medical Center. We are committed to providing outstanding patient care, educating the next generation of providers, and supporting the UMass community through our involvement in quality improvement and clinical research, as well as leadership within the medical system, Internal Medicine residency, and UMass Chan Medical School.

Our clinical responsibilities include admission and inpatient management of the consistently increasing, medically complex, and socioeconomically diverse population of patients that we serve here at UMass Memorial Medical Center. We pride ourselves in providing exceptional and evidenced-based care together with our specialty colleagues. We work closely with patients, their families, physical therapy, occupational therapy, case management, and social work teams to ensure that before each patient leaves the hospital, they will do so with a safe disposition plan with careful attention paid to transitioning each patient’s care back to their outpatient providers.

We are constantly looking within ourselves to determine how to best optimize our staffing plans, practice guidelines, and services to promote the safe and efficient flow of our patients through the inpatient setting. We have developed protocols to support our specialty colleagues with the care of their patients in the periprocedural period, multiple initiatives aimed at promoting early discharges, and multidisciplinary rounding, including our own Hospital Medicine Procedure Service.

In addition to providing outstanding patient care, our group has a core principle of supporting the educational, quality improvement, and leadership pursuits of our providers. We are fortunate to have hospitalists in our group who have earned executive-level leadership positions here at UMass Memorial Medical Center as well as numerous system-based quality care committees. Our clinicians are directly involved with the leadership and development of our Internal Medicine residency program, for which our hospitalists serve in the roles of associate program directors and master clinician educators.  Additionally, our hospitalists serve as core faculty and leaders for several groups within the UMass Chan Medical School, including the Longitudinal Preceptorship Program, learning community mentors, associate directors for the Third Year Clerkship in Internal Medicine, as well as core faculty in the medical school VISTA curriculum design.
