Undergraduate Medical Education
Faculty members from the Division of Geriatric Medicine are very involved in numerous educational initiatives at the undergraduate medical education level which include:
Geriatric Teaching Days
The Division of Geriatric Medicine sponsors the UMass Chan Geriatric Teaching Day. The Geriatric Teaching Day typically includes a dinner for students and faculty with a focus on exploration of the career path of a geriatrician and a Medicine Grand Rounds presentation led by the visiting professor.
Geriatrics Interest Group
The student-led Geriatric Interest Group for first- and second-year medical students and nursing students provide lectures for medical and graduate nursing students on topics related to the care of older adults. Many members of this group are also involved in the Navigator program.
Navigator Program
This innovative program matches medical students and students from the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing and pharmacy students from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) with older adult patients of geriatricians. These students have a longitudinal experience following the patient in their primary care and specialty appointments to learn about health care provided to older adults.
Flexible Clinical Experience
In this joint effort between the Divisions of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care Medicine third-year medical students may select to participate in a one-week clinical rotation in ‘The Care of the Older Adult in the Home’. This experience allows the medical student to learn more about geriatric medicine, palliative care, and the inter-professional team within the home.
Fourth-Year Elective
Fourth-year medical students can participate in a two-week geriatric elective. This experience includes clinical experiences with geriatricians, nurse practitioners, and members of the inter-professional team in the clinic, skilled nursing facility and home care settings.
