Meet Our Fellows

Sher BanoName: Sher Bano, MD

Hometown: Worcester, MA
Medical School: Aga Khan University Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan
Residency/Fellowship: Internal Medicine Residency at UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, MA, Nephrology fellowship at Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA
Hobbies: Dancing, painting, enjoying nature, learning about philosophy and psychology

 Interest in Geriatrics:
I felt a pull from the field of geriatrics as it exemplifies taking holistic care of an individual with multiple co-morbid conditions, by incorporating the complex socioeconomic, cultural, religious, and personal aspects into their medical decision-making.

What are your favorite Central MA activities?
Enjoying the cuisine of local restaurants, and exploring the innumerable hiking trails.

Why did you choose UMass Chan Medical School for your Geriatric Medicine Fellowship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my residency at this institution and wanted to come back to complete my journey through fellowship. During my residency, I was fortunate enough to get to know some of the geriatricians in the department, some of whom had a lasting impression on me and inspired me to return and learn more from them. Additionally, UMass is a large academic center with many specialists working in concert with the geriatrics division —not to mention the multiple nursing homes/rehabs affiliated with the division. This made me confident I was going to get the necessary experience needed to become a well-rounded geriatrician.

Onica Washington, MD, PhDName: Onica Washington, MD, PhD

Hometown: Charleston, South Carolina
Medical School: Medical University of South Carolina
Residency/Fellowship: Internal Medicine Residency at UMass Chan Medical School, Worcester, MA
Fellowship in Nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA
Hobbies: Playing videogames, traveling, doing embroidery stitch, going to the gym, and trying new foods with my husband

Interest in Geriatrics:
I enjoy working with the geriatric population because I love hearing the stories of many of my patients. It fascinates me that so many of them have lived through such historic events, and I find that many offer invaluable advice and wisdom that I can apply to my own life.

What are your favorite Central MA activities?
Trying new restaurants and playing in the snow (there is no snow in the south).

Why did you choose UMass Chan Medical School for your Geriatric Medicine Fellowship?
I had the privilege of completing my internal medicine residency at UMass Chan Medical School in 2021. When the opportunity arose to return for a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, the decision was clear. UMass Chan Medical School has perfected a remarkable blend of world-class medicine with compassionate, patient-centered care. Returning to where my medical journey began and completing my training here has been a dream come true.
