Core Small Group Faculty (CSGF)

Small group teaching in Vista plans to build and expand on the well-established student-faculty longitudinal relationships and experiences that were built in LInC. The role spans the entire academic year throughout the discovery phase. These positions report to the Assistant Dean of the Foundational Curriculum/OUME or their designee.

Core Small Group Facilitator (CSGF) - 0.075 FTE per facilitator

The responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and teach small group sessions/activities within blocks that primarily include:
    • Case-Based Learning (CBL)
    • Problem-Based Learning (PBL)
    • Simulation
  • Participate in general faculty development regarding small group teaching and review of materials and topic-specific faculty development before each session
  • Collaborate with block directors, early clinical, and clinical application leaders to ensure appropriate content delivery and integration
  • Create educational experiences that add value to student learning and competency
  • Support the students – communicate and respond to their queries in a timely manner
  • Provide summative and formative assessments and feedback for students, which includes narrative feedback
  • Participate in other medical school activities (e.g. multiple mini interviews (MMIs) for medical school applicants), if needed, to meet the supported time

Please note the following with relation to scheduling details:

  • The small groups are consistently scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the discovery phase of Vista, with rare inclusion of Friday mornings. The calendars are published at least 6 months in advance for convenient scheduling.
  • Each CSGF team comprises 2 faculty members. Only one member of the team needs to facilitate each session – so, the work can be divided up amongst members of a team according to their convenience.
  • Each CSGF team will facilitate CBLs, PBLs, and simulations for a specific student group (n=12) through the Discovery Phase (18 months) of Vista.
  • A total of 150 hours/year (0.075 FTE) is accounted for with all responsibilities combined for the role.

We seek a diverse group of faculty who are passionate about shaping the future of our profession. Generalists or specialists who work with patients of any age group, are willing to facilitate sessions outside of their area of clinical expertise, have the desire to develop professional skills as small group and simulation educators, and are enthusiastic for change and embracing engaged teaching methodologies are welcome to apply.
