University of Massachusetts announces $175 million transformational gift to its Medical School

  • UMass President Marty Meehan said UMass is “committed to excellence and that’s where UMass Chan Medical School is leading the way.”
  • Chancellor Michael F. Collins said the gift is unrestricted, “which is rare, and quite frankly a dream come true for a university.”
  • Gerald Chan, representing The Morningside Foundation, said their gift is intended to draw attention to the “urgent need for supporting our state universities at a time when resources available to them lag far behind the resources available to the elite private universities, notwithstanding the fact that it is the state universities that educate the vast majority of college students in this country.”
  • Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said UMass Chan Medical School’s high ranking in primary care education is key.
  • UMass board trustee Chioma Okwara, MD’17, cited her own experience as a student at UMass Chan Medical School in recognizing the value of the university and the importance of the gift.
