National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice
The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) has announced the establishment of National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice (NCTTP). NAADAC collaborated with Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD) in establishing the credentialing program.
This unified certification process is an important step to enhance the professionalization and recognition of tobacco treatment as a specialty. It provides a foundation for advocacy of health care insurance reimbursement for tobacco treatment services delivered by qualified providers.
The National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice (NCTTP) will replace the varied certification programs that currently exist. Therefore, the Center for Tobacco Treatment Research and Training no longer issues the UMass Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) Certification. The TTS certification renewals are not required.
The NCTTP application is available at https://www.naadac.org/ncttp and includes all the details you will need to complete and submit it. Note that we do not have access to any certification documents or application forms. All questions or requests about TTS certification should be directed to NAADAC.
Our staff at the Center will do all that we can to help you achieve the NCTTP. Below is a list summarizing the criteria that will be required on the NCTTP application. The NOTE highlighted below is how we can help you as you go through the NCTTP application process.
The National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice Application Process
STEP 1: Submit the NCTTP application for approval. Requirements include:
- Provide evidence of one of the following:
a. High School diploma plus 4,000 (2 years full-time) of work in a human services position.
b. Associate’s Degree plus 2,000 (1 year full-time) of work in a human services position.
c. Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
2. Provide evidence of successful completion of a Tobacco Treatment Specialist training (TTS) program. The training program must be accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs. A list of the current accredited Tobacco Treatment Specialist training programs can be found at: http://ctttp.org/accredited-programs.
NOTE: You will need a UMass TTS training 'documentation of completion'. If you successfully completed training after October 2018 this document was sent to you with your exam score. If you need a duplicate or completed training before October 2018, send your request to cttrt@umassmed.edu. Indicate “Document of Completion” in the subject line. We will send you a copy of your 'document of completion' via email. Please allow up to two weeks to receive the document of completion.
3. Document 240 hours of tobacco treatment practice experience following the completion of Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) training.
4. Self-attest to a minimum of 6-months tobacco-free including the use of electronic nicotine delivery devices. (i.e.: vaping, e-cigarettes, etc.).
5. Adhere to the Tobacco Treatment Provider Code of Ethics as described in the application
6. Candidate must mail application and all supporting documents with the non-refundable application fee of $150 as directed on the application form.
