Lining up to recycle home electronics
The morning brought gray skies and waves of rain, but the campus home electronics recycling event on June 9 was not a washout.
At the first event of its kind since the pandemic hit, members of the UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health community took the opportunity to clean out old household items and have them properly recycled.
In total, 5,598 pounds of electronic products, including microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, air conditions, home entertainment components, computers, and peripherals were collected.
“It was a great success,” said Samantha Belisle, an environmental health & safety specialist who helped organize the event. “People were really happy to have this opportunity. It had been a long time, and I think we will do it again next year.”
All the material collected was processed by Northeast Material Handling, the Medical School’s vendor for reuse and recycling of electronics and large bulk items.
