How to Apply to the Residency
2024-2025 Recruitment Season
General Surgery Residency Program
Our program’s commitment is to your safety and equity.
To achieve this:
- Applications will undergo a review of applicants experiences and attributes. Selection of applicants is based upon value-and mission-alignment.
- All reviewers and interviewers will take part in implicit bias training.
- We will offer invitations only for the number of slots we have available.
- First round interview offers will be sent October 23 – November 1. Offers will occur on a rolling basis after this time.
- Applicants will have 48 hours to respond to an interview invitation.
- We request a 2 week cancellation notice if you are not able to attend your interview.
- All interviews will be virtual in AM and PM sessions. Program details with a schedule will be distributed in advance.
- All categorical and preliminary interviews will be conducted virtually.
- While we welcome communication after the interview, post-interview communication from applicants is not required and will not impact the rank list.
Institutional requirements related to applicant eligibility may be found at:
https://www.umassmed.edu/gme/future-residentsfellows/application-process/

All required documents must be submitted through ERAS and will not be accepted outside of ERAS. All applications will be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service only (ERAS).

Separate preliminary PGY-1 and PGY-2 interviews will be offered.
The institution accepts a standardized personal statement but suggests that applicants consider discussing attributes that will help foster the applicant's competence and resilience.
To ensure safety and equity of applicants, all interviews will be conducted virtually. We will adhere to recommendations made by APDS regarding the interview season.
