Elective Description: This rotation is most appropriate for students who are considering a career in Family Medicine. Hahnemann Family Health Center (HFHC) is a busy urban health center providing patient-centered medical home services to a population from the close-knit neighborhoods of Worcester. HFHC is a great learning laboratory for Family Medicine as its patient mix reflects the Worcester community which is very diverse with respect to age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Full spectrum Family Medicine, from the cradle to the grave including obstetrics and women’s health reproductive services are offered. As a major residency training site for the UMass Family Medicine Residency, HFHC features multiple daily educational activities. Our students are fully integrated into the health care team participating in all clinical and educational activities, including ambulatory care, hospital rounds, deliveries, nursing home visits, and several weekly educational conferences. Each day is capped with an interactive session of chart rounds when all the residents and students assemble and discuss patients seen that day. Our 4th year students are encouraged to develop their own educational plan for the rotation including possible opportunities to spend some time working in our satellite clinic in Plumley Village (an urban housing project), at our college health services (i.e., HFHC provides medical care to students from Clark University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Holy Cross College), in the Hahnemann Sports Medicine Clinic (staffed by family physicians), and/or the local offices of HFHC alumni in private practice. |
