Fellowship Director Welcome
Dear Fellowship Program applicant,
This is an exciting time for Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School. Our concerted efforts in managing the COVID-19 pandemic has been exemplary, thanks to the teamwork of our 26 faculty members and nine fellows. Teaching remains a focus for us and we maintain an excellent faculty-to-fellow ratio. We have expanded our ICU coverage to the equivalent of five medical units and fellow exposure to high-level critical care continues to be a major strength for our program. Pulmonary medicine remains busy and we have continued our telehealth program for our outpatients as well.
The division is fortunate to have a busy interventional pulmonary medicine service. Two faculty members are board-certified in this relatively new medical discipline and this affords our second and third-year fellows ample opportunity to evaluate patients and participate in advanced interventional procedures. The division is also fortunate to have an active critical care telemedicine service, providing 24-hour coverage of all of UMass Memorial Health’s intensive care units as well as the units of affiliated hospitals. A feature of this forward-looking model for critical care is an extensive database of ICU patients that can be a rich data source for clinical research studies. Collaborative research efforts with other departments within the medical school have also brought many exciting research opportunities in both clinical and basic science.
The fellowship is an ACGME certified three-year program that prepares our fellows to sit for the ABIM Board examinations in both pulmonary and critical care medicine. The first year of the fellowship emphasizes clinical chest medicine and medical intensive care. The second-year is heavily weighted to allow our fellows to participate in advanced interventional pulmonary procedures and in research projects under the guidance of one of the faculty mentors. The third-year is dedicated to additional critical care medicine experience needed to satisfy eligibility for the critical care board examination. Case-based and didactic conferences are a regular feature of the curriculum throughout the three years of training.
In addition to providing an outstanding and comprehensive training program in pulmonary and critical care medicine, the program aims to provide mentorship and fosters an environment conducive to building and maintaining an excellent quality of life. Fellows continue to have extensive opportunities to teach medical students and residents, preparing them to become educators of the future.
