Sheldon Benjamin, MD is Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the UMass Chan Medical School (UMass Chan), where he has served as Director of Neuropsychiatry since joining the faculty in 1986. He is currently the Interim Chair of Psychiatry, and has been Director of the UMass Chan Neuropsychiatry Fellowship since its founding in 1989, Director of the Adult Psychiatry Residency Program since 1995, and Co-director of the Combined Neurology/Psychiatry Residency Program since its founding in 1997.

Dr. Benjamin is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  He completed psychiatry residency training at Tufts New England Medical Center and neurology residency training at Tufts and Boston University.  He is also a graduate of the Boston University/Boston Veterans Administration Fellowship in Behavioral Neurology.  Dr. Benjamin is board certified in both psychiatry and neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and is certified in Behavioral Neurology/Neuropsychiatry by the United Council on Neurological Subspecialties.

He served as President of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training (AADPRT) in 2010 - 2011, and President of the American Neuropsychiatric Association from 2013 - 2015.  He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and a Fellow of the American Neuropsychiatric Association.

Dr. Benjamin has been selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award by the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (2001), the UMass Chan Lamar Soutter Award for Achievement in Education (2008), and the UMass Chan Chancellors Medal for Distinguished Teaching (2012). In 2018 he was recognized by the American Neuropsychiatric Association with the Gary J. Tucker M.D. Lifetime Achievement Award in Neuropsychiatry, the highest award in the field of neuropsychiatry.

A specialist in the evaluation of behavioral problems at the interface of psychiatry and neurology, his interests include neuropsychiatric problems in movement disorders, seizure disorders, dementia, traumatic brain injury, developmental disability, as well as neurobehavioral issues in general psychiatric disorders and bedside neurocognitive assessment. He teaches clinical neuroscience and neuropsychiatry; and has published and presented widely on neuropsychiatry, clinical neuroscience training of psychiatrists; educational technology; and residency training issues.  He is co- author of The Brain Card®, a guide to comprehensive bedside neuropsychiatric examination, and is one of the authors of the ACGME-ABPN Psychiatry Milestones.
