The mission of the Addiction Psychiatry fellowship is to train psychiatrists to become experts in the biological basis of addiction, to prepare them to provide care to patients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and to empower them to be advocates for their patients in healthcare settings as well as in the community.

The program features clinical rotations and translational research opportunities, with particular emphasis on rehabilitation and longer term residential services for co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions – including chronic pain.

Focused on group treatment programs and other psychotherapy methods, the fellowship experience draws from the rich clinical and research expertise of a diverse group of faculty members. The program spans a full spectrum of specializations from psychopharmacology to multiculturalism and addiction, to basic neuroscience, psychosomatic medicine, and state-of-the-art psychosocial interventions.

Clinical Rotations

Clinical rotations in the fellowship program occur in a public sector adolescent detoxification and rehabilitation unit, a general hospital buprenorphine clinic within the Addiction and Comorbidity Treatment Service (ACTS), an organization-wide tobacco cessation program, a Veterans Center for addiction treatment, and a continuum of care for opioid dependent patients – from detoxification through substitution therapy to community rehabilitation.

The primary training rotation sites are UMass Memorial Healthcare, Community Healthlink, Bedford VA Hospital, AdCare Hospital, and Spectrum Health Systems. The VA is a key supporter of the program. Rotations are structured to provide exposure to disparate treatment modalities and patient populations.
