Pediatric Simulation

We strive to incorporate pediatric simulation experiences throughout residency training in order to develop clinical skills, foster teamwork and leadership, and improve patient care. Our Pediatric Simulation Committee is composed of a multidisciplinary group of physicians, nurses, residents, medical students, respiratory therapists and pharmacists.

Examples of how pediatric simulation is incorporated into resident medical training include:

  • PALS/NRP Bootcamps – Intense training experiences focusing on core PALS/NRP resuscitation skills
  • Skills Sessions – Dedicated time to practice basic skills such as bag mask ventilation and lumbar punctures
  • Paired Didactic and Simulation Sessions – Conferences teaching PALS topics, coordinated with hands-on simulation bringing lecture materials to life
  • Crisis Resource Management Training – Interprofessional sessions in the iCELS simulation center at UMass Chan Medical School. Learners include residents, medical students, nurses and respiratory therapists
  • In situ Simulation – Brief (~30 minute), in situ, interprofessional simulations on the pediatric floor and the PICU, which cover a planned core set of cases and skills. Sometimes, combined ward-PICU simulations add to the fun! Simulations also occur as patient volume allows in the NICU and in the pediatric emergency department
