Program Overview
The overall mission of the PATH Fellowship is to train the next generation of pediatric scientists to conduct rigorous research that addresses critical drivers of child health inequity.
The overall goal of the training program is to prepare trainees to specialize in child health equity research and be productive independent academic scientists and scholars in this novel and critical area.
The program includes coursework and mentored research training; and will support up to two new fellows annually. The postdoctoral program for fellows is for three years.
Training is tailored to each Fellow’s specific goals
Educational strategies to achieve these goals include:
- Mentored research opportunities
- Core curriculum activities
- Clinical work (for Fellows with clinical degrees, up to 20% of the fellowship will be devoted to clinical work)
- Experiential learning
- Formal coursework
- Personalized training pathways that emphasize foundational and/or complementary areas in the implementation of child health equity interventions, community-based research, and family-centered interventions delivered within the healthcare system
Core Competencies
Upon completing the program, PATH Fellows will have gained the ability to:
- Apply a health equity and antiracism lens to conducting clinical research
- Apply scientific concepts to clinical research study design
- Demonstrate culturally responsive, community-informed mixed methods research skills
- Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior in research and practice with colleagues, collaborators, and study participants
- Demonstrate communication skills necessary to disseminate research findings
- Work effectively with interdisciplinary research team members
- Demonstrate grant writing skills needed to secure extramural funding during the fellowship and beyond
- Understand the biostatistics, data management, and data analytics needed to review and conduct research
- Define key knowledge and skills to be a leader and mentor in health equity research
- Demonstrate curiosity and lifelong learning skills
