UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center offers the only comprehensive pediatric hematology/oncology program in Central Massachusetts. Our focus is on the most advanced medical care combined with the best emotional support for your child and your family, and due to our relatively small size, our team can provide a level of personalized care that larger institutions simply can’t match.
Types of Cancers We Treat
We treat a wide range of cancers in infants, children, adolescents and young adults, including:
- Leukemias (all forms)
- Brain and other central nervous system tumors
- Neuroblastoma
- Wilms tumor
- Lymphoma (Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin)
- Bone cancer (osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma)
- Soft tissue sarcomas
- Germ cell tumors
Types of Blood (Hematology) Disorders We Treat
Our pediatric hematology team provides evaluation and treatment for all pediatric blood disorders, including:
- Hemophilia
- Red blood cell disorders
- Disorders of white blood cell number and function
- Sickle cell disease
- Clotting problems, including bleeding, thrombosis and platelet disorders
Specialized Clinics We Offer
Hemophilia Clinic
Our hemophilia clinic is part of the New England Hemophilia Center, which belongs to the federally funded Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) network. (HTCs are specialized health care centers that bring together a team of doctors, nurses and other health professionals experienced in treating people with hemophilia.)
Sickle Cell Disease Clinic
Our Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic serves children, adolescents and young adults with Sickle Cell Disease and all its variants from birth through young adulthood. Our team includes pediatric hematology/oncology attending physicians, two pediatric nurse practitioners, a social worker and administrative support staff. We’re equipped to diagnose and treat the complications associated with this life-long illness and we strive to preserve the health and well-being of our patients with Sickle Cell Hemoglobinopathies. Our hematology/oncology specialists provide care 24 hours a day with patients routinely being seen in the outpatient setting at least twice a year, and in the UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Department for emergent visits. Our clinic is a member of the New England Pediatric Sickle Cell Consortium, an organization dedicated to bringing up to date information to all of the Sickle Cell Centers in New England and beyond.
Survivors’ Clinic
At our Survivors’ Clinic, caregivers help identify health issues related to cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiation exposures. The group sees childhood cancer survivors of all ages, including adults. Our aim is to diagnose early treatable issues, such as endocrine, reproductive health, neuropsychiatric and bone health, and then start screening patients for more serious issues. During visits, the team screens for problems and ensures that cancer survivors are getting the follow-up care they need. Examinations, testing as needed, and patient and family education are key components.
