GI & Liver Pathology Fellowship

Fellowship Description

The one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship is designed to provide experience in GI/Liver and pancreaticobiliary pathology cases in the setting of complete subspecialty sign out. Our GI/Liver fellowship training program is aimed to prepare the fellows a transition from residency to independent practice in all settings after the training. The Division of Anatomic Pathology accessions approximately 77,000 surgical specimens and nearly 50,000 cytology specimens per year. UMass Memorial Health Care is also one of three active liver transplant centers in the New England area, and provides about 55 liver transplant procedures yearly. The core faculty includes four GI/liver subspecialty trained pathologists and a senior well-rounded pathologist. The fellow will be responsible for signing out GI/liver subspecialty pathology cases, including transplant liver biopsies and pediatric GI cases. In addition, the fellow will perform frozen sections at multiple UMass Memorial campuses. There are opportunities for limited rotations  through other subspecialty services, when necessary. The fellow will teach grossing skills to beginning pathology residents and subspecialty interesting cases to the residents. The fellow will present tumor cases at multidisciplinary hospital conferences. There will be opportunities for translational research projects with different faculty.
