Facilities

UMass Chan is comprised of a Medical School and a modern 784-bed teaching hospital located at two campuses (University and Memorial) approximately 1.2 miles apart.  The Department of Pathology occupies approximately 78,000 sq. ft of space overall.

The Division of Basic Science Research is located in the Albert Sherman Center on the 9th floor. It occupies 29,000 sq. ft of contiguous space containing newly renovated laboratories, common equipment space, cores and meeting rooms. The Department has developed its own common and shared instrument cores. These include but are not limited to 4 flow cytometers with high throughput screening, fluorescent microscope, Gel imaging systems, phosphoimager, biacore, real time PCR, beta-plate counters, ultracentrifuges, and shakers. In addition, investigators have ready access to state of the art institutional cores including transgenic and knock out, animal metabolics and phenotyping, flow cytometry, confocal and 3-D deconvolution microscopy, histopathology, gene chip analysis, deep sequencing, RNAi libraries, small molecule screening, electron microscopy, 2D-Gel and proteasomics, mass spectrometry, NMR and crystallography.

The Division of Anatomic Pathology occupies 29,000 sq. ft. of contiguous space, which includes 25,000 sq. ft of newly renovated space at Three Biotech, adjacent to the UMass Memorial University Campus. This facility has state-of-the-art anatomic pathology laboratories, seminar rooms, multiple sign-out rooms with 6 and 20 multi-head microscopes, and a very spacious resident room. Each desk of the resident room is equipped with an individual microscope and a computer with internet access that connects to the UMass network, including the medical school library which offers access to hundreds of online journals. There are also rapid response laboratories located on both the Memorial and University Campuses.

Hospital laboratories occupies approximately 20,000 sq feet of renovated space at One Biotech adjacent to the UMass Memorial University Campus. This facility has clinical pathology laboratories with state-of-the-art instrumentation, extensive automation, medical informatics, seminar rooms and a resident room. Rapid response laboratories are situated on both the Memorial and University Campuses, providing services to inpatients, emergency services and the nationally recognized Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
