The Neuropathology service provides diagnostic evaluation of adult and pediatric central nervous system and neuromuscular disorders.
The consultation services include:
- Evaluation of surgical specimens of neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders of brain and spinal cord utilizing standard histology as well as immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular diagnostics
- Evaluation of brain and spinal cord pathology in autopsy specimens
- Evaluation of nerve and muscle biopsies by standard histology, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy
- Electron microscopic evaluation of diagnostic skin biopsies for neurologic disorders (e.g. CADASIL).
The types of specimens that may be submitted include: fresh and fixed (formalin, glutaraldehyde) tissue, paraffin blocks, and slides.
Specific procedures are required for submission of nerve and muscle biopsies (see link to Specimen Requirements and Transportation)
