Mission
- To provide accurate and timely pathology diagnosis on skin biopsies to assist dermatologists and other clinicians to achieve high quality patient care for cutaneous diseases.
- To provide an optimal education for medical students, pathology and dermatology residents, and dermatopathology fellows.
- To advance knowledge through basic and clinical research and the translation of advances from the laboratory to clinical practice.
Consultative Services
Our dermatopathology service is housed in a state of the art facility and processes over 15,000 skin specimens from dermatology clinics at UMass as well as from other dermatology practices in central MA. The services we provide include:
- Light microscopic examination and interpretation of specimens from skin that are routinely processed and H&E stained, with further special stains if indicated, including PAS, Gram, mucin, AFB, Fite, Giemsa, melanin, elastin and trichrome.
- Immunohistochemistry studies.
- Immunofluorescent studies for immunoblistering and other autoimmune disorders.
- Molecular and cytogenetic studies, including T and B-lymphocyte clonality analysis and FISH.
- Ultrastructural study
- Clinicopathological correlation

- Paraffin block or unstained slides and one H&E
- Tissue fixed in 10% Neutral buffered formalin
- Tissue fixed in Zeus fixative (for immunofluorescence studies)
