Campus Initiatives
Campus Initiatives
UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health (UMMH) have begun several initiatives in response to national concerns about clinician burnout and wellness.
Physician Engagement Committee
This committee was charged with addressing concerns about physician engagement as demonstrated by low scores on the 2015 Physician Engagement Survey. Committee members represent UMMH, UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC), UMass Memorial Medical Group (UMMG) and UMass Chan Medical School. in 2016–17 the committee identified departmental champions for physician engagement, increased physician representation on key committees, established physician lounges on University and Memorial campuses, and implemented several award programs.

In 2018, the committee was divided into three sub-committees:
- Communication. Established with the goal to clearly communicate the ongoing efforts and progress being made to reduce physician burnout and strengthen our physicians’ sense of community, while gathering and incorporating feedback.
- Community. Established with the goal to provide an environment that enables the creation and sustenance of strong, healthy and collegial relationships amongst UMass Memorial physicians that will be leveraged by strong communication mechanisms.
- Burnout. Established with the goal to recommend a strategy to mitigate factors that contribute to burnout and propose a metric(s) to track progress.
To date, this sub-committee has surveyed the literature on burnout, inventoried institutional resources for wellness, planned a strategy through meetings with physicians, and developed recommendations to be proposed to UMMHC/UMass Chan Medical School leadership on combating burnout.
