Research, Evaluation, & Assessment

The Division of Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (REA) provides direction and support to faculty and administrators in student assessment, curriculum evaluation, and medical education research. We serve the education research and evaluation needs of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine, Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing, Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Office of Graduate Medical Education, and a number of other school offices including Diversity & Equal Opportunity Office and Human Resources.

iCELS

iCELS was established in 2006 to support and develop medical simulation in our educational programs for all of our learners - medical students, nursing students and residents.This multi-school resource is managed by the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, which serves as the hub for providing faculty with the resources needed for curriculum development, implementation and evaluation, and ensuring a rich educational experience for students.The UMass Chan Simulation Center is located on the first floor of the medical school, in S1-300.

Standardized Patient Program

The UMass Chan Standardized Patient Program was established in 1982. Standardized patients are lay people trained to simulate certain medical conditions in a realistic and consistent fashion. They are also trained to act effectively as evaluators and teachers of medical students, physician assistant candidates, nursing students, residents, and practicing clinicians. They are able to document an examiner's performance, and provide written and verbal feedback in a positive and non-threatening setting. The purpose can range from educational to evaluative in assessing communication and clinical competence.
