Letter from our Department Chair

Dear Applicant, 

I am thrilled to share information with you about our Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship training program. I am writing as Department Chair and as a proud alumna of one of our GME training programs (Ob/Gyn residency).

I can state unequivocally that we have an excellent program with dedicated faculty that offer and continuously iterate improvements in all aspects of our curriculum – improvements driven by changes in standards of care, regulations, education theory, and resident/fellow/faculty input. Our mission is to not just train, but to inspire, the next generation of subspecialists in Maternal-Fetal Medicine to be compassionate and outstanding clinicians, educators, research scientists, advocates, leaders, and lifelong learners.

Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship was established by a supremely dedicated and committed faculty wanting to share their experience and expertise with the next generation of subspecialists dedicated to the care of the birthing person and fetal dyad. Fellows are exposed to a wide variety of complicated pregnancy and postpartum issues given a robust patient base of nearly 5,000 deliveries in a tertiary care referral center that includes critical care obstetrics within the maternity center.

The robust MFM faculty inclusive of physician attendings and advanced practice providers is very collaborative and has well established collaborative partnerships with neonatology and other numerous specialties and subspecialty that are integrated into interdisciplinary high-risk, fetal specialty, diabetes, and other dedicated clinics. Fellows are trained by leaders in the field as represented by SMFM leadership and have opportunities for international experiences. Limitless scholarship opportunities are available through research and quality improvement initiatives.

Our Department is committed to advancing knowledge and quality of care in our specialty. Our Research Division works with residents and fellows to develop, execute, analyze, and present their chosen research projects. Fellows are expected to develop their own projects with guidance from our experienced faculty. These projects form the basis for their required thesis and are routinely published and presented at national meetings. Fellows have an opportunity to apply for department dedicated funds to support projects as needed.

We routinely collaborate in our research with other disciplines including the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences (PQHS). We are open to nurturing all areas of scholarship and research interests for our fellows and encourage fellows to realize the great opportunity that is the Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) which is taught by the esteemed PQHS faculty.

We want to ensure that you are fully prepared to succeed in your career and be leaders in the field. Towards that goal, we have special efforts regarding diversity inclusion and equity, teams and team building, communication skill building, organizational management, quality improvement, advocacy, professionalism, ethics, wellness, and career planning. It is important to us that this part of your training establishes a foundation for lifelong career satisfaction. 

The faculty and I are very proud of our educational program.
