UMass Neurosurgery Adult Hydrocephalus Program
The UMass Neurosurgery Adult Hydrocephalus Program treats adults with normal pressure hydrocephalus and all other types of hydrocephalus or disorders of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. Our multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and other professionals are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. After a thorough evaluation using the most advanced diagnostic methods, a personalized treatment plan is developed for each patient. One of the most common conditions that we see is Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). NPH usually begins after the age of 60 and is characterized by gait difficulty, incontinence and dementia. NPH is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease or “old age”. The symptoms of NPH can be improved by surgically implanting an internal drainage system to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid.
Conditions We Treat

- Chiari I Malformation
- Communicating Hydrocephalus
- Congenital Hydrocephalus
- CSF Leak
- Obstructive Hydrocephalus
