Program Highlights
Neurological Rehabilitation and Recovery fellowship is a two-year program.
Our fellows receive intensive clinical training in the following areas:
1) Differential diagnosis of neurological diseases and related disorders
2) Interpretation of MRI and other imaging techniques
3) Symptomatic treatments for the management of pain
4) Rehabilitation of chronic neurologic illness.
Fellows also have the opportunity to receive additional clinical training in subspecialties of particular relevance to neurological rehabilitation and recovery for severe TBI, such as:
- neuro ICU
- neurosurgery
A major focus of the fellowship is the design and implementation of clinical trials. The fellow participates in several multi-center clinical trials as well as our own investigator-initiated clinical studies.
Curriculum:
We encourage the fellow to attend regional or national society meetings and to present their work.
The fellow will be involved in:
Weekly - Interdisciplinary neurology conferences
- Weekly neuroICU conference – with neurocritical care, neurosurgery, and trauma surgery
- Weekly neuropsychiatry conference
- Weekly neurology/neurosurgery/interventional radiology conference
Fellows participate in weekly conferences with collaborative colleagues from neurosurgery, neuro intervention, radiology, and other specialty groups to provide level-one patient care with a collaborative specialty focus. The fellow must take part in at least one presentation during the training year.
Weekly - case discussion forums
Fellows participate in weekly division meetings, didactic lectures, research and case discussions presented to current attendings designed to:

Introduce new learning styles of approaching difficult cases

learn to focus on specific and acute solutions via ongoing laboratory research and clinical trials
Monthly Lectures and Seminars
Individual lectures are presented once a month by fellows.

- Monthly Department of Neurology grand rounds seminar sessions
- Annual Harvard-hosted CME conference for Neurological Rehabilitation
Rotation Coverage:
The 12-month fellowship provides a broad range of curricular activities to increase the breadth of knowledge in traumatic brain injury services while avoiding resident and fellow fatigue through the rotation service schedule. The fellow will:
- develop technical skills of Botulinum Toxin injections for migraines and spasticity
- program/refill and troubleshoot baclofen pumps
- learn various pharmacologic agents used to target specific symptoms.
Service months of curricular activities for year 1 and 2:
- Inpatient rehabilitation 2-full days per week
- Clinic 1-full days per week
- NeuroICU 1-half day per week
- Elective 3-half days per week
*Additional time exposure to inpatient rehabilitation and neuroICU is available through elective time
(allowing for more concentrated focus in areas of interest)
(1) Mandatory rotations

- Neuropsychology: 1.2 months / two years (= 3 half days/week x 16 weeks)
- Spine: 1.2 months / two years
- Pain: 1.2 months / two years
- Botox: 1.2 months / two years
(2) Optional rotations: TMS, EEG, NCS/EMG, research, additional time spent in ICU or inpatient rehab

Neurological Rehabilitation and Recovery collaborates with a variety of other neurology divisions allowing additional focus in research and clinical expertise through our mentors and faculty. Trainees have the opportunity to receive experience in support programs such as:

Intervention studies (TMS), prognosis/outcomes studies, and ongoing clinical trials provide exposure
Comprehensive, well-rounded, and longitudinal clinical training with a focus on brain injury, stroke, neuromuscular, autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and other neurological disorders.
