About Our Lab
In essence, our research focuses on understanding the immune mechanisms involved in neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system. By doing so, we hope to improve our understanding of the disease and pave the way for potential therapeutic approaches in the future.
Neuroimmunology, a field within immunology, shows great promise and has seen significant growth in recent years. It can be divided up into two subfields: NEUROIMMUNOMODULATION and NEUROINFLAMMATION.
NEUROIMMUNOMODULATION involves the interaction of neurotransmitters produced by the nervous system with cells of the immune system. Molecules play a role in affecting various aspects of immune cells functions, like:
- ADRENALINE
- DOPAMINE
- SEROTONIN
- GLUTAMATE
On the other hand,
NEUROINFLAMMATION occurs when immune cells infiltrate the nervous system, triggering a local immune response. In this context, resident cells of the central nervous system, play important roles, such as:
-
-
-
-
- ASTROCYTES
- MICROGLIA
- NEURONS
