Raffaela Umeton, MD, Assistant Professor of neurology

Academic Appointment:
Raffaella Umeton, MD, MMSc, is an Assistant Professor of Neurology since joining UMass Chan Medical School as a faculty member in 2020. She is fluent in english and italian. 

Umeton, MD, is a graduate of the UMass Chan Medical School Neuroimmunology fellowship and Neurology residency programs. Dr. Umeton also completed a fellowship at the Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis and Demyelinating Disease Clinic and an International Visiting Fellowship at the Neuroradiology department both at MGH in Boston. Dr. Umeton earned her medical degree at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, followed by a master's in medical sciences in Headache Medicine summa cum laude at the same institution. 

Umeton, MD, Research Experience: 
 - Exploring the association between gut microbiome and MS in collaboration with the UMass Center for Microbiome Research
 - Studying the epidemiology of primary headache disorders in MS patients.  
 - Research in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.  
 - Correlation of primary headache disorders in MS patients from epidemiology to the role on disability and psychiatric comorbidities.  
 - Investigating the neuroinflammatory component of migraine etiology and impact of migraine treatments on MS. 

Umeton, MD, Clinical Experience: 
 - Board-certified in Psychiatry and Neurology
 - Specializes in evaluation and managment of patients with MS and other neuroinflammatory disorders.  
 - Treats patients with headache disorders.
 - Experience with autoimmune disorders of the nervous system 

Umeton, MD, Education Experience:
 - Active member of the (NMSS) National Multiple Sclerosis Society, New England Chapter.  
 - 2021-2023 President of the (MNA) Massachusetts Neurologic Association
 - AAN, American Academy of Neurology member.
