Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be a UMass Chan-affiliated MD, DO, DVM, DNP, PharmD, or PhD or MD student. Members of underrepresented groups in the sciences and medicine are particularly encouraged to apply.
While no minimum grade point average is required for entry into the program, applicants must have successfully completed medical or graduate school from an accredited institution, with demonstrated superior academic performance. UMass Chan Medical School students applying to complete the MSCI during a one-year leave of absence must have demonstrated superior academic performance in medical school and prior research experience with UMass Chan faculty.
Admissions Process
Complete applications contain the following, with a June 15th, 11:59pm (EST) deadline for Fall Entry and a December 1st, 11:59 (EST) deadline for Spring Entry:
- Submitted application and non refundable $80 fee
- Unofficial transcripts from any college attended
- A personal statement of one to two pages describing your:
- educational expectations
- career aspirations
- research experience
- any special qualifications you may have
- research areas of interest
- potential mentors at UMass Chan Medical School
- Resume or CV
- Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are able to assess past academic performance, research experience, and prospective success in graduate school. Letters from UMass Chan faculty are preferred. One letter must be from your direct supervisor (e.g., Fellowship director, Residency director) stating that you will have adequate protected time to complete the program and willingness to adjust responsibilities to allow for attendance in required courses. To facilitate the integration of MSCI requirements with clinical responsibilities, the MSCI program has no educational formal course requirements held on Mondays and Fridays. Furthermore, core required courses are held on Tuesday and Thursdays between 8am and noon and Wednesdays 3:30-5pm during the Fall and Spring semesters. The letter from the Residency/Fellowship Director must state that the applicant will be able to fully participate in classes held during these blocks of time.
