Licensing Exams Requirements

  • SPECIAL NOTE: COVID - USMLE Step 2 CS Temporarily Suspended

    On March 10, 2020, Governor Baker declared a State of Emergency in Massachusetts in Executive Order No. 591, Declaration of a State of Emergency to Respond to COVID-19.  Federal and state authorities likewise responded to the urgent coronavirus pandemic. On March 13, 2020, the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) suspended the administration of the Step 2 Clinical Skills Examination due to COVID-19 and the need to social distance.  On May 26, 2020, the USMLE announced that the administration of the Step 2 Clinical Skills Examination was suspended until at least June 1, 2021, due to the unique, human-to-human delivery mode of this examination.

    Accordingly, the Board of Registration in Medicine has temporarily suspended the requirement under 243 CMR 2.02(7)(d)2 that an applicant submit evidence of having passed the Clinical Skills Component of USMLE Step 2 as a requirement for qualifying for a limited license.  This temporary suspension will occur automatically if the applicant has not previously failed USMLE Step 2 CS two or more times.

    If an applicant has failed the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills examination two or more times, prior to March 13, 2020, the date the USMLE suspension went into effect, he/she must apply directly to the Board for a temporary suspension of the 243 CMR 2.02(7)(d)2 requirement.

  • All applicants for PGY3 or higher level position MUST have passed Step 3 of USMLE prior to their date of hire.
  • US and Canadian Graduates must  demonstrate a passing score on: USMLE United States Medical Licensing Examination  Step 1, Step 2CS and Step 2CK or equivalent examinations COMLEX for graduates of osteopathic medical schools or MCCQU licensing exam for graduates of Canadian medical schools
  • International Medical School graduates must demonstrate a passing score on:  (USMLE) United States Medical  Licensing Examination - Step 1, Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK  and  Must hold a valid ECFMG certificate

Licensure Requirements

  • Appointment eligibility is subject to the Board of Registration in Medicine’s requirements for licensure (some programs may require full rather than limited licensure).  Requirements for full or limited licensure for US and international medical graduates are listed on the Board of Registration Web Site at http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/gov/departments/borim/

ECFMG Certification for IMGs

IMGs who seek to enter a clinical training program in the U.S., must first obtain ECFMG Certification. For additional information on ECFMG Certification, please review the ECFMG Certification fact sheet. 

Visa Sponsorship Requirements

Non  U.S. Citizens  must hold a valid J 1 - F1 or H1B (see limited circumstances) 

Requirements for applicants with PREVIOUS OR CURRENT GME positions:

Applicants seeking to transfer to a UMass program or change specialties must submit a letter of recommendation from all previous program directors and the current program director, before receiving a GME appointment.

Credentialing 

  • All applicants must meet the joint UMass Chan/UMMMC Graduate Medical Education Credentialing requirements  before an appointment can be finalized.

Employee Health Requirements

  • All applicants must meet all Employee Health clearance requirements including required immunizations, screening, and pre-employment drug testing.
