The Graduate Medical Education Programs at the UMass Chan Medical School serve the Central Massachusetts region with Worcester serving as the second largest city in the state.  Worcester is a diverse city comprised of individuals across several races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Credentialing: All applicants must be able to meet the joint UMass Chan/UMMMC Graduate Medical Education credentialing requirements before an appointment can be finalized.
  • Compliance: All applicants MUST be willing to meet the :
    • Adherence to the bloodborne pathogen policy
    • Compliance with any other Residency/Fellowship program-specific technical standards
    • Completion/signing of the UMass Chan Medical School Graduate Medical Education Appointment Agreement
    • Abiding by the provisions stated within the GME Personnel Policies
  • Employee Health: All applicants must be able to meet all employee health clearance requirements including required immunizations, screening and pre-employment drug testing (pay careful attention to FLU and COVID vaccine mandates currently in place).
  • Applicants applying with a previous or current GME position:  Any applicant seeking to transfer to a UMass Chan Medical School program or change specialties MUST submit a letter of recommendation from ALL previous program directors and the current program director before receiving a GME appointment.

Requirements for International Medical Graduates

  • Applicants for PGY3 or higher-level position MUST have passed Step 3 of USMLE prior to the date of hire.
  • International Medical School graduates must demonstrate a passing score on (USMLE)United States Medical  Licensing Examination - Step 1 and Step 2 CK
  • IMGs who seek to enter a clinical training program in the U.S., must first obtain ECFMG Certification. For additional information on ECFMG Certification, please review the ECFMG Certification fact sheet
  • Appointment eligibility is subject to the Board of Registration in Medicine’s requirements for licensure (some programs may require full rather than limited licensure)Requirements for full or limited licensure for international medical graduates are listed on the Board of Registration websiteat http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/gov/departments/borim/
  • Check with your program of interest for any other requirements.
  1. Determine your Eligibility: Review the criteria to determine your eligibility to work at UMass Chan Medical School and to obtain a License in the state of Massachusetts.
  2. Programs that participate in Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) require applicants to apply via ERAS.
  3. Programs not participating in the ERAS may complete a UMass Chan GME Generic Res/Fell Application.
  4. Programs that participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) require you to apply through the NRMP.

Requirements for U.S. and Canadian Medical Graduates

  • Applicants for PGY3 or higher-level position MUST have passed Step 3 of USMLE prior to the date of hire.
  • US and Canadian graduates must demonstrate a passing score onUSMLE United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 and Step 2CS or equivalent, COMLEX Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination for graduates of osteopathic medical schools, or MCCQU licensing exam for graduates of Canadian medical schools.

Program Specific Requirements

Some programs do not participate in the NRMP match or have other unique program requirements.  Please be sure to view the list of programs that provide additional information about their application process that you should know about.
